I am sorry for the long delay in posts. I injured my back and I am just now being able to sit for any length of time. I will be working on the next posts a little at a time as my back allows. Thank you for your patience. If you have any ideas to share please feel free!

No new post this week

Caregiving - Feeding a Non-Existant Appetite 6/6

Here are this week's tips. Please send me a comment with your ideas!

  • Home cooked meals are almost always more appetizing that commercially prepared foods.

  • If your loved one is able, have them help in the preparation of food.

  • If possible go for a short walk before meal times as exercise might stimulate their appetite.

  • You may want to talk to their doctor about an appetite stimulant.

Caregiving - Feeding a Non-Existant Appetite 5/6

Hints for this week have arrived!
  • Find out why they aren't interested in eating...could it be dry mouth? ill fitting dentures or sores? trouble swallowing? a metallic or altered taste (due to medications)? nausea? Once you know the cause you can figure out how best to make food more appealing.

  • Offer five or six small meals rather than 3 big meals. A big plate of food can be daunting to a person who isn't feeling well.

  • Allot plenty of time for them to eat, don't rush them. Let them eat when they are ready.

  • Encourage a regular eating schedule when you can but allow for changes.
Have any hints you would like to share? Please feel free to comment!
